<image:title>OCD, ERP, and ACT Therapy New York - Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is the foundation of our clinical practice at the New York City Center.</image:title>
<image:caption>CBT is a type of psychotherapy that has been extensively researched and consistently shown to be effective at treating a variety of mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, substance abuse, and more. CBT focuses on recognizing how unhelpful thought patterns impact feelings and behavior. Through a combination of analyzing, practicing with interactive exercises, and between-session “homework,” clients can begin adapting helpful thought patterns that help them take action towards their goals. You can read more on CBT from the Beck Institute here.</image:caption>

<image:title>OCD, ERP, and ACT Therapy New York - Exposure Therapy a technique in behavior therapy used to effectively treat issues of anxiety. stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Like CBT, Exposure Therapy is an effective treatment for fears and anxieties. It has been scientifically demonstrated to help individuals suffering from GAD, phobias, Panic Disorder, SAD, OCD, and PTSD. In Exposure Therapy, a therapist might recommend a program of graduated exposures (e.g., exposing an individual to the thing that they fear) in order to help break the pattern of avoidance and live a more satisfying life. The exposure to the feared objects, activities or situations in a safe environment helps reduce fear and decrease avoidance over time.</image:caption>

<image:title>OCD, ERP, and ACT Therapy New York - Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) cognitive behavioral therapy is a type of CBT that has proven effective for OCD and anxiety disorders.</image:title>
<image:caption>In ERP, clients expose themselves to the feared situations, thoughts, or objects that prompt their obsessions while also refraining from acting out their compulsions. The client and therapist first complete these exposures in session, then develop a plan for the client to begin regularly practicing exposures outside of sessions. ERP cognitive behavioral therapy requires a strong commitment from the client to confront their triggers (which can be an uncomfortable or scary experience), but over time, the obsessions fade away and the compulsions are no longer necessary. You can read more on ERP from the International OCD Foundation here.</image:caption>

<image:title>OCD, ERP, and ACT Therapy New York - Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is related to CBT, but focuses on mindfulness, acceptance, and committed action towards personal values.</image:title>
<image:caption>ACT (pronounced like the word “act”) relies on a term called “psychological flexibility”, which helps clients change their relationships to their thoughts, connect with the present moment, and make behavior choices that serve their values. Therapists use talk therapy and experiential exercises to identify avoidant behavior and build tolerance for sitting with pain, discomfort, and uncertainty - all of which are essential human experiences. You can read more on ACT from the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science here.</image:caption>

<image:title>Anxiety Treatment in New York - How we treat anxiety at City Center Psychotherapy</image:title>
<image:caption>City Center therapists specialize in treating issues of anxiety through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Exposure Therapy. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Research has shown that CBT is an efficacious and effective treatment for anxiety disorders including Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Panic Disorder, and phobias. CBT therapists work with a client to identify and address how the client’s thoughts and behaviors interact to create anxiety. With a therapist, you will work to recognize how negative thought patterns influence your feelings. By recognizing and changing negative thought patterns, as well as changing behaviors that lead to the worsening of anxiety, CBT can help you better manage issues of anxiety and feel better. Psychoeducation about why anxiety occurs and exercises also support positive outcomes for clients. Exposure Therapy Like CBT, Exposure Therapy is an effective treatment for fears and anxieties. <image:title>Anxiety Treatment in New York - Meet Jeremy.</image:title>
<image:caption>Jeremy was on the subway headed to work one day when his heart started racing, he couldn’t catch a breath, and he was flooded with feelings of fear and dread. He was experiencing his first panic attack. Although Jeremy had experienced feelings of anxiety before, he had generally tried to ignore those feelings. The panic attack made Jeremy realize that he needed to find a solution to his anxious feelings, which prompted him to begin therapy with us. In his sessions, Jeremy shared that he was constantly stressed about work. His worries and fears about the future kept him awake at night and he always felt “on edge.” With his therapist’s guidance, by creating a daily thought record Jeremy was able to notice the frequency of his automatic negative thoughts and identify his triggers. Using exercises from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, we helped Jeremy consider alternate views and tolerate uncertainty about the future. Jeremy has also found utilizing skills such as mindfulness, journaling, and lunchtime walks has added to his well-being. Jeremy is now able to manage his anxiety and feel a greater sense of calm.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Roman was a talented IT professional with a steady job, an apartment of his own, and a loving family. Despite all of this, he felt sad, empty, and disinterested in activities outside of work. His depression had slowly worsened over the past year and he developed a habit of isolating himself every weekend. With online therapy sessions for depression we helped Roman create a behavioral plan that challenged him to socialize with friends at least once per week and to spend at least an hour each day working on his photography - something he knew he loved but never felt motivated to do. We also helped Roman identify his negative self beliefs and learn how to reframe these beliefs to develop a more positive and growth-oriented view of himself.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Evelyn sought out therapy to work through her history of sexual abuse. She was a busy journalist who could distract herself from the occasional flashbacks and negative thoughts about her past, however, it was becoming increasingly difficult since she began dating again. Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, we helped Evelyn challenge the damaging beliefs she developed after the traumatic event. We also used her talent for writing to create several trauma narratives that could repeatedly expose her to the painful experience in a safe way, which is the key intervention of Prolonged Exposure therapy. Over time, the fear about her story subsided and she could date with confidence knowing her needs and boundaries in relationships.</image:caption>

<image:title>Life Transitions Therapy City Center New York - Meet Rachel.</image:title>
<image:caption>After graduating from college near her hometown in the Midwest, Rachel accepted an offer for her first full-time job in New York City. Moving to the city was both exciting and terrifying. She enjoyed her work, but felt like she left her whole support system back home and struggled to make new friends. She also felt tremendous guilt for being so far away from her mother, who was chronically ill and living alone. Rachel constantly questioned her decision and got trapped in negative thought patterns. We provided Rachel a safe space to process this transition, taught her how to reframe her limiting beliefs, and helped redefine her personal and professional goals. She got involved with a local volunteer group, where she could meet people and get connected to her community at the same time. By the end of treatment, Rachel felt confident about her new life in New York and hopeful about what opportunities it would bring.</image:caption>

<image:title>OCD and Related Disorders Treatment New York City Center - How we treat OCD and OCD-Related Disorders at City Center Psychotherapy</image:title>
<image:caption>At City Center, we treat OCD and OCD-Related Disorders with an effective, evidence-based therapy called Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). ERP involves a combination of exposing clients to situations that trigger their anxiety—but at a tolerable level—and helping them refrain from their paired response or ritual. By exposing individuals in a controlled manner to the situations or items that induce anxiety, while simultaneously disallowing the individual to use a coping mechanism (avoidance, ritualization, or escape, for example), overtime the anxiety reduces. ERP is considered the gold-standard treatment for OCD and OCD-Related Disorders. You can read more about ERP therapy here.</image:caption>

<image:title>OCD and Related Disorders Treatment New York City Center - Meet Andrea.</image:title>
<image:caption>Andrea began therapy when she realized how her checking OCD was impacting her son. She had an overwhelming fear of something bad happening as a result of her carelessness. She spent hours each day checking locks, ensuring the stove was turned off, and making sure her son was safe. Andrea’s son became angry with her constant checking and their time together felt strained. Using Exposure and Response Prevention, we helped Andrea spend extended periods of time resisting her urge to check that her house and her son were safe. After a few months of treatment, her compulsions faded away and left her with a lot of extra time to devote to building a better relationship with her son.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Juli Teitler, LCAT, ATR-BC presents ‘Beyond Words: Visual Thinking Tools in Clinical Practice’ for Rutgers University Date: Friday, May 29, 2026 | Time: 9:30am - 12:30pm Many clinicians encounter moments when verbal processing alone does not move therapy forward. Clients may feel emotionally flooded, stuck in rumination, or able to articulate insight without meaningful change. This workshop introduces art-informed visual tools that support core CBT and ACT processes such as externalization, cognitive defusion, and values clarification. Participants will learn when to introduce visual externalization, how to use art as a thinking aid similar to thought records or diagrams, and how to maintain ethical scope using the ExpressiveTherapies Continuum framework. Through structured examples and experiential practice, clinicians will develop skills in observation-based inquiry and applying art interventions within cognitive and behavioral treatment. This approach is important because it offers another pathway into the work when language alone is insufficient, while keeping the CBT framework central and clinically grounded. This webinar provides 3 CEs for social workers.</image:caption>

<image:title>Psychotherapy News and Events New York - Dr. Hemphill presents ‘Actualizing ACT: Translating Acceptance and Commitment Therapy’s Concepts and Metaphors to Practice’ for NYU Silver School of Social Work</image:title>
<image:caption>Date: Friday, April 17, 2026 | Time: 10:00am - 12:00 pm This workshop engages the practitioner who has foundational knowledge and training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) by overcoming common obstacles to implementation of this modality related to translating principles, concepts and metaphors to real life scenarios and challenges. After a brief review of the ACT hexaflex, it will focus on dimensions within it - self as observer, thought diffusion, acceptance and committed action - often cited as the most difficult to concretize. ACT has important and powerful potential to improve an individual's psychological flexibility. This presentation will employ the thinking processes familiar in case conceptualization, case examples, role plays and activities to help the practitioner to collaborate with individual clients more effectively so that this potential is better realized. This webinar provides 2 CEs for social workers.</image:caption>

<image:title>Psychotherapy News and Events New York - Juli Teitler, LCAT, ATR-BC presents ‘Art, Language, and CBT-Informed Thinking in Art Therapy Practice’ for Nazareth University</image:title>
<image:caption>Date: Friday, March 27, 2026 | Time: 9:00am - 11:00 am This 2-hour virtual webinar introduces art therapy students and early-career clinicians to foundational concepts from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) through an art therapy centered lens, with no prior CBT training required. Participants will receive an accessible overview of CBT, followed by an introduction to top-down and bottom-up processing and how these frameworks relate to art-based clinical work. While art therapy often emphasizes what images can communicate beyond words, this training highlights the important role of language, therapist dialogue, and narrative in helping clients reflect on, organize, and integrate the meanings that emerge through art-making. Rather than teaching CBT as a standalone modality, the webinar focuses on how CBT informed concepts can support clinical thinking, observation, and guided reflection within art therapy practice. A brief experiential art intervention will b included to demonstrate how art-making, reflection, and language work together in session. The webinar concludes with a summary of key concepts and considerations for ethical, scope appropriate integration.</image:caption>

Congratulations to them on this huge accomplishment. The Practice of Clinical Social Work in Healthcare (2023) was written by 28 social workers, each with extensive experience in frontline healthcare practice, from over 20 institutions across the country. Taking a psychosocial lens of illness with social work at the center of psychosocial care, the text focusing primarily on clinical aspects rather than systems-level work. This book looks at trauma, social justice, bereavement and countertransference in each illness cluster and also includes chapters on communicating with children about an adult's illness, trauma-informed approaches to serious illness, and impacts of social policy on the provision of clinical work in healthcare.</image:caption>

<image:caption>City Center's own Dr. Meredith Hemphill co-edited and wrote in a new book on social work in healthcare with Dr. Abigail Nathanson.
